Formulas behind the fish tank calculator

Depending on the shape of the tank, you can use the various volume formulas to manually calculate the aquarium’s size.

Rectangular prism

Determine the volume of a rectangular prism, also known as the volume of a box, in order to determine the volume of a typical aquarium:

rectangular = height × width × length

Our rectangular prism calculator will make this calculation simple.

Cube

The simplest volume equation is for an aquarium shaped like a cube; just raise the edge length to the third power.

Our cube calculator can help you calculate this volume easily.

Cylinder and its fractions

Utilize the following formula to determine the water volume of a cylindrical aquarium:

cylinder = π × (diameter / 2)² × height

If your aquarium is half the diameter of a cylinder, no problem—just divide the above formula by two:

half cylinder = height / 2 × (diameter / 2)²

Calculate the quarter of the cylinder’s volume by taking a fourth of the total volume:

quarter cylinder = π × radius² × height / 4

In the final example, it is more convenient to use radius rather than diameter: diameter = 2 × radius

Bow front and bow front corner aquarium

It is more difficult to determine the bowfront aquarium’s volume. The height, width, length, and the entire width of the aquarium are the four dimensions that must be provided in order to calculate the final formula:

bowfront = height × width × length + 0. 5 × r² × (α – sin(α)) × height,.

where r is a circle’s radius and α is the circular segment’s central angle, expressed in radians. α = 2π – 4β can be used to calculate the angle α, where β is an angle that can be expressed as:

tan(β) = 0.5 × length / (full_width - width).

The formula is as follows for the aquarium with a bow front that is meant to stand in the corner:

corner bowfront = (0.5r² × (α - sin(α)) × height)/2

Check out our other tools, like the spherical cap calculator or triangular prism volume, which can find the water volume for spherical aquariums, also known as fish bowls, if your aquarium is shaped differently or uniquely. Just keep in mind that these kinds of tanks are inappropriate—in fact, they are prohibited in some countries—for housing fish!

Small tanks are typical for spherical aquariums; fish are forced to swim in circles, which is against their natural instincts, and installing a filter in such a tank can be challenging. Though such a fancy-looking tank, think about a different shape for your aquarium.

FAQ

How can you tell what size fish tank you have?

The volume of a fish tank is calculated by multiplying its length, width, and height. If you have a 3ft by 2ft tank, and let’s say it’s 2ft high, the volume would be 3ft x 2ft x 2ft = 12 cubic feet. To convert cubic feet to litres, you multiply by 28.3168.
